Of course we are back with another one.

As we said before, If you’ve ever been in our studio or at least gazed in the background of some of our posts, then you know that our walls talk. As do the shelves, the windowsills and any other flat surface that can serve as a home to the artful treasures that we adore and our adoration stems from the stories that they tell.

This week’s treasure tells a little tale about a local skate club that once was. Right here in Hampton Roads.

Behold this absolutely delightful Rollerskate Suitcase, with skates and a program dated April 5th, 1952 from Newport News, Virginia. The once upon a time home of a Skateland Roller Rink and it’s team of fun-loving young folks on wheels, The Jeff-Briar Rockets. It was located off of Jefferson Avenue, at the corner of Briarfield Road.
If our sleuthing is correct, all evidence points to these skates belonging to “Bob”. Otherwise known as Robert Pepa, according to the program contained within.

Before becoming a skating rink in 1941, it was first a dance hall and in its time featured would be musical legends like Charlie Spivak, Harry James, and Louie Armstrong. Once a skating rink, it was of course home to The Jeff-Briar Rockets Roller Skating Club, and they would frequently travel up and down the East Coast competing for honor and glory in races, pairs dancing, etc. This tradition continued until April 1st of 1970, when the rink sadly perished in flame. But when remnants such as these and appreciaters such as ourselves remain, nothing is ever lost nor forgotten.

Lunch is handcrafted daily here in the Red Chalk kitchen. Usually lovingly, occasionally begrudgingly. But we make it happen. Dietary restrictions and allergies aside, you get what you get and then you get!

However, birthdays are an exception to the rule. If one’s birthday is on the horizon, they get to choose what they would like to have.

This week we celebrated the anniversary of Anthony not getting his requested birthday lunch last year by making sure we made it for him this year. Sushi.

He never let us forget. For an entire year.
Oh sweet, sweet Anthony……

To honor him further, he was adorned with a custom made headdress which reads, in Japanese, “Ōkina otokonoko ni kiwotsukete.”

Translation - “Watch out for the Big Boy!”

Allow us to regale you with a tale about this one. A Red Dot Potato Chip Tin.

From 1938 to 1973, Red Dot Foods, was one of the top potato chip manufacturers in the US. They made other snacks but as legend has it, their potato chips were the most delicious potato chips that ever were.

They were also the only the chip company that owned and operated their own farm where they grew their own crops. Fred and Kaye Meyer, the owners and operators, were all about quality control.

Fred and Kaye met and fell in love in college. She majored in commerce. He majored in chemistry. It was a match made in potato chip heaven.

They even published a magazine for employees and family and friends to wax poetic over snacks known as “Chip Chat”. Sometimes there was a creepy clown! Ha!

How cool were Fred and Kaye?

Lookout! It’s a December sizzle reel.

It’s been an action-packed month over here at Red Chalk. We made some new friends and we got to hang out with some old ones. There was silliness. There was creation. There was birthday mac and cheese accompanied by sweet treats delivered to our door. There were escape room successes and hilarious defeats. A pretty tree happened here and so did a bread making abomination. Both were exquisite in their own special way.

Now we’re wrapping things up around here. Have the happiest of holidays and we’ll be seeing you soon. Don’t forget to drink your Ovaltine!
