Quarantine Top 5 Disaster Movies

Here’s something you may not know about our Ellen… She loves a good disaster movie.

Whether it’s tornadoes, or earthquakes, or snakes on a plane (no, that’s way over the top), or — ack, a virus — she loves watching good people overcome adversity. (Is that why she volunteers with Virginia Beach EMS? Most likely.) With that in mind, here’s her list of favorite disaster movies:

1. Twister

What the heck is it about this movie that begs me to watch it again and again? The crazy storm trackers? The cow flying by? The “Here’s Johnny!” scene from The Shining at the drive-in before the screen gets ripped apart? That and a lot more.

2. Dante’s Peak

Another one I can watch on repeat. Classic recipe of a sweet, small town living in the shadow of a dormant volcano that suddenly erupts. The one volcanologist (I know, right?) who knows something’s about to happen, but nobody believes him. The growing relationship between him (Pierce Brosnan) and the town’s mayor (Linda Hamilton). Things exploding, bricks flying, the LAVA…

3. The Poseidon Adventure

Come on now, it’s a CLASSIC. Who can resist the small group of merrymakers who are dancing at a New Year’s Eve party one minute, and then are fighting for their lives after a huge wave flips the ocean liner belly up? The cast of Gene Hackman as the defiant preacher, Ernest Borgnine as the brash cop with a heart-of-gold married to Linda, the former prostitute, Jack Albertson and Shelley Winters (their sweet marriage and her brave swim—LOVE!), is a must see. There’s definitely a 1972 vibe, which can be a real hoot.

4. The Perfect Storm

It’s based on the true story of a crew of fishermen who just need that one good haul. Their boat, the Andrea Gail, goes out on the last trip of the season, and gets caught in two severe weather fronts AND a hurricane. Bonus, it stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Diane Lane. And a wicked good Massachusetts accent.

5. And finally, how could I not include Outbreak with our current state of affairs?

It’s the story of the outbreak of a virus… And how far society goes to contain the spread of this deadly, contagious disease. It stars Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman and Donald Sutherland, as well as Cuba Gooding Jr., Kevin Spacey and Patrick Dempsey. Who gets it? Who’s cured? Watch and see while you’re practicing safe, social distancing…
