Brand Archetypes: The Magician

Oh, the power of perception…

Your business is one that helps people dream big dreams. And then brings them to life. Is your business also one that turns the ordinary into extraordinary? Is it a trusted advisor that seemingly knows the truth and delivers the best outcomes? Is it clever and charismatic and, dare we say, magical? If your business is one that has these qualities, wanting to help people transform their world, then your archetype is—tah-dah—the Magician!

For example…

Polaroid as the Magician.

Just like a magician has the ability to see the world through many different lenses, so did Edwin Land, Polaroid’s founder. Even though he was born into a world where vacuum cleaners, the automatic traffic signal, and the humble Band-Aid did not yet exist, he went on to invent the polarized lens, and the famous Polaroid SX-70 instant camera—inventions that felt like they were from the future.

Today, when everything feels temporary and disposable, where nothing is around long enough to move us, Polaroid exists “to help you see those moments, to pause them, and to relive them in something you can hold in your hand and turn to forever.” Almost like… Magic.

Disney as the Magician.

Disney is known as one of the most magical places on earth “where dreams come true.” This brand has innovated and created an empire that brings a magical feeling to all it touches, ranging from television, movies, amusement parks and products. In fact, isn’t the centerpiece of each theme park called “The Magic Kingdom?” Indeed, it is. The experience they offer is one of wonder, where you can “explore lands of endless enchantment, where your fantasy becomes a reality,” no matter your age.
